'When the All-Day Race is announced, Dixie knows he must win first prize. But Dixie and Percy face two problems: Dixie's car keeps getting them into trouble, and secondly, his arch-enemy Lou-Ella has a brand new sports car that leaves them in the dust.'
Dixie O'Day In the Fast Lane is the first in a series by mother-daughter team Shirley Hughes and Clara Vulliamy. Parents and children alike are likely to recognise Hughes owing to her picture book superstardom with Dogger, voted the public's favourite CILIP Kate Greenaway Medal winner off all time, and her Alfie series. Those that do will know her will know they're in for a treat!
Dixie O'Day is a wonderful tale of adventure and mischief which is sure to entertain budding readers and provide a natural next step in to chapter books. Paired with the simple yet engaging illustrations, we can't think of a better or more enjoyable way to encourage independent reading.
The story is separated in to seven chapters, so is ideal for reading a chapter a night, but with the momentous milestone of having read One Whole Chapter, you may be hard pressed to get them to stop at just one. Along with the activities at the back of the book and a quiz which, quite beside being great fun for all involved, provides a sneaky and easy way for parents to assess their child's engagement with the story, we wouldn't be surprised if your little one moved straight on to Dixie O'Day and the Great Diamond Robbery.
